Ahmedabad has come long way since the days when there were only a handful of schools and getting kids admitted required knowing a highly influential person. Now, you can pay and get admission. However, with choices comes the confusion. Here are some guidelines.
The state schools (SSC) system has changed for the better. Many of schools have well-equipped libraries and laboratories but please note the state board syllabus is different from what is followed in USA. Those who wish to take admissions in medical and engineering colleges in Gujarat after 12th standard, stand best chance of admissions if they pass 12th standard from Gujarat State board. Many parents put their kids in other boards till 9th or 10th, and then transfer them to Gujarat board from 11th standard for the above mentioned reason.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools usually offer good facilities, teachers and teaching methodologies. They imbibe the Montessori methods in the early years and gradually transition the child to the traditional methods of learning.
The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) schools are similar to the CBSE ones. But the syllabus is more comprehensive and vast. The child would have to study varied subjects at a greater detail in higher classes. Otherwise, the facilities and co-curricular activities in these schools are comparable to CBSE schools.
This is a recent trend in India; the schools are new with sprawling premises. The curriculum is more practical than theoretical. The child is allowed to learn in an open environment. Assessments are based on the quality of work rather than the quantity. This school system is ideal for any child. But the fees structure in these schools is as high as Rs.250,000.
